Resident Advisor has created mini-documentary about the Detroit electronic music scene titled, ‘Real Scenes: Detroit’ Reference (Luke Hess & Brian Kage) are featured in the documentary.

You can’t talk about electronic music without mentioning Detroit. That’s why in the second edition of Real Scenes, RA and Bench went to the city which birthed the genre we now call techno.

Detroit has always had a creative streak, due in large part to the boom and subsequent bust of the auto industry. Quite simply, Detroit is a city of extremes, and its music reflects that. These days, Detroit’s importance in the global electronic music scene is often referred to in the past tense. When we visited the city, though, we found a number of artists with their eyes (and ears) firmly set towards the future. After our time in the Motor City, it’s clear to us that Detroit will endure and innovate for years to come.

Christina Chatfield was raised in a family of classical musicians, geographically and culturally located between the warm jacking beats of Chicago house and cool soulful stabs of Detroit techno. Espousing her genetically rooted appreciation for music, Christina attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston where she quickly absorbed every detail of electronic synthesis and began her analog hardware and studio gear addiction.

With the ‘Finite EP’ on Beretta Grey, Christina has created two timeless pieces of music that are sure to please intelligent dance floor goers around the planet.

The Beretta Music record label was founded in 2002 by Brian Kage & Ryan Sadorus (aka Ryski). In 2007, Sadorus moved out to San Diego, California, and stepped down as Beretta’s label manager. Since then, Sadorus has had time to embrace the west coast atmosphere / sound there fully. While working a full-time job, and raising a new family, Sadorus has still found the energy to continue writing music.

Combining what he’s taken in from the west coast house scene, with his techno roots in Detroit, Ryan Sadorus returns to the Beretta with a slammin’ new EP titled, ’313 State of Mind.’

The first cut, ’313 State of Mind’ is a most definitely a result of Sadorus’ new hybrid West Coast/Midwest sound. A thick tech-house groover built upon deep Rhodes progressions, Juno-synth stabs, soulful vocals, and sizzlin percussion which is all encompassed by a deep-ass moog style bassline and a kick drum that will send any dance floor into frenzy. Old school & new school cats will definitely enjoy this one.

‘The Way Back’ gets back to Sadorus’ roots as it pays homage to the techno stylings he has come to know whilst living in Detroit. ‘The Way Back’ comes storming out of the gates meaning business, with the introduction of an undefeatable tag-team of syncopated organic percussion & a super massive dirty bassline. ‘The song continues it’s march whilst building into an all-out, hands in the air, feel good, synth affair that will surely have even the most jaded ravers busting the liquid ball dance out on the floor.

In the first Reference VS project we squeezed some of the party out of Seth Troxler and some of the percussion expertise from Ryan Crosson to create the still sought after tracks “The Fade” and “The Bumps”. In the second installment of our Reference VS series we wanted to get a bit more soulful, & deep with the music, and highlight two of the world’s finest dub techno artists – Stephen Hitchell (CV313) and Marko Furstenburg (Surphase).
